As we all get organized for another wonderful school year, here is the Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe Checklist for the Busy Moms. This checklist will ensure your kid(s) have all the items they need in their closet (without feeling the pressure/stress to wash every day/every three days — because honestly, who has the time or needs that stress as a busy family) but also helps you avoid overspending due to lack of organization.
We put in the work and have come up with this capsule wardrobe checklist, mostly science with a little art, to help you build a wardrobe for your kids to make a great impression, develop their confidence, and feel great!
Here are the most efficient and easy steps to edit your kid’s current wardrobe to ensure their closets are always organized. We’ll help you pass on what no longer fits, identify what you need for the upcoming season, and get organized so that when you enter into the “Buy” phase, you know exactly what the kid(s) need to ensure that you aren’t overspending and purchasing items that your kids don’t need.
Living this way is an excellent example for our kids and the best for our planet.

Step 1: Declutter and Inventory 〰
Go through your kid(s) dresser and closet and organize their clothes by size and season. This feels like an overwhelming task, but trust me, it goes faster than you think! Especially if you do it 3-4 times a year (with every changing season). Now I can do both my kids in about 15 minutes!!
Make sure you print the checklist below BEFORE you start so that you can declutter and inventory simultaneously!!
Step 2: Up-Cycle or Store 〰
For any items, your kid(s) have outgrown or no longer need, get them out of their drawers/closets to stay organized.
- For the seasonal items, we will pack them away for next year. We use bins season after season, so everything has a place, and it’s easy to pack away and pull out again next year.
- For what your kids have outgrown, donate them, pass them on to family or friends, or we love ThredUp and Poshmark because they are both super easy and a fantastic way to make a little extra money for your family. We love giving our kid’s clothes a second life.
- For sentimental items, pack them away in a special box or have them framed and hung in your home for your family to enjoy as artwork for years to come.
Step 3: Determine Ideal # Outfits By Age 〰
Be honest with yourself and how often you will do laundry. This chart is a guide based on doing laundry once a week (If you do laundry every three days (way to go, you!), you can divide the numbers in half!)

Step 4: Use this checklist to determine what you have and what you need 〰
We like breaking up kids’ seasonal refresh into a few days because it does take a little time, and it’s hard to sneak in pockets of concentration with kids. Download this checklist to note what your kid(s) have, and you’ll be prepared to “go shopping” when you have a few minutes later.
Step 5: Buy 〰
Use the list you filled out to buy what your kid(s) still needs, tallying up your purchases as you make them.
I hope this checklist makes refreshing your kid’s wardrobe a little easier! Xx Meg
