I recently came across Jesse Itzler (who, if you’re like me and didn’t know who he was until recently, he’s built and sold 5 companies, is focused on raising his four kids, giving motivational speeches, and, as he says, “helping people do life better”). Oh yeah, and he’s married to Sara Blakely (the founder of SPANX!). I recently binged his Instagram and website to devour allll his content — and let me tell you — I am obsessed!
My favorite — must implement into our life IMMEDIATELY — is his three secrets to a great life. It’s simple, but done year after year will lead to you WINNING LIFE. Let’s break his three rules down.
Rule #1 — Add An Annual Misogi
There is an old Japanese ritual — the Misogi — that refer to a unique and challenging practice of purification. In traditional Japanese culture, misogi involved immersing oneself in cold water or standing under a waterfall to purify the body and mind. But in today’s times, misogi has taken on a broader meaning. It’s a challenge that pushes you to your limits and forces you to confront your fears, doubts and weaknesses. It’s about transformation. It’s about shedding old habits and beliefs, and embracing a new, more powerful version of yourself. By pushing your physical, mental, and spiritual limits, you’ll discover a reservoir of strength and resilience that you never knew existed. You’ll gain a newfound sense of confidence and courage, and you’ll be better equipped to handle the challenges that life throws your way.
So, pick one big thing that defines your year. For example, in 2023, I launched a podcast, I ran a marathon, or I quit drinking. ONE BIG THING THAT DEFINES YOUR YEAR.
Rule #2 — Follow Kevin’s Rule
The happiest guy Jesse knows, Kevin, is this blue-collar friend he’s known forever. Kevin introduced him to this idea, and it’s brilliant. Every other month Kevin does something that he normally wouldn’t have done — he plans an activity or trip to take. Apply this rule, and every year, you go on 6 mini-adventures. If you are 36 and you live to be 86 years old, that’s 300 more experiences you wouldn’t have had otherwise. THINK ABOUT THAT!
Rule #3 — Create ONE Winning Habit Every Quarter
The rule explains the assignment, but the point is you focus on creating one (and only one!) winning habit every quarter. You could choose to do a 10-minute meditation every day, commit to never being late to a meeting, start waking up at 4:30am, or any habit that you want to create. Pick ONE and focus on masting it every quarter.
Think about these three rules — if you add 4 winning habits, 6 mini adventures, and a killer experience to your life every year — YOU HAVE WON LIFE!
So, who is with me? Who is ready to implement these rules into their life? We still have one more quarter left in the year! Why wait until the new year? Start NOW! What 2 mini-adventures will go you on before they year is over? What winning habit will you master this quarter? It might be too late to define and accomplish your Misogi, but at least start thinking about what you want it to be next year.
As always, thanks so much for being here! Your friendship and readership mean the world.
